Eczema

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a common skin condition characterized by inflamed, itchy and red skin. It is also called atopic dermatitis. It can appear on any part of the body, but is most common on the hands, feet, face, elbows, and knees.

The exact cause of eczema is unknown, but it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Eczema is common in people with a family history of allergies, asthma or eczema.

Eczema can take different forms, but usually it starts as red, scaly skin that is very itchy. In some cases, the skin may be swollen and inflamed, and blisters and scabs may also develop.

Eczema treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing recurring outbreaks. Treatment options may include applying moisturizing creams and ointments, avoiding triggers such as certain foods, using medicated creams or ointments containing corticosteroids, and in severe cases, using oral medications.
